Regione Campania

The Campania region, land of myth, today boasts 15 DOC and 4 DOCG (a total of 19 DOP), as well as 10 IGP.

The DOP/DOCG (Denomination of Controlled and Guaranteed Origin) of Campania are: Taurasi, Greco di Tufo, Fiano di Avellino and Aglianico del Taburno.

The DOP/ DOC (Denomination of Controlled Origin) bells are: Taurasi, Greco di Tufo, Fiano di Avellino and Aglianico del Taburno: Ischia, Capri, Vesuvius, Cilento, Falerno del Massico, Castel San Lorenzo, Aversa, Sorrento Peninsula, Campi Flegrei, Amalfi Coast, Galluccio, Sannio, Irpinia, Casavecchia di Pontelatone, Falanghina del Sannio.

The IGP/IGT (Typical Geographical Indication) wines are: Colli di Salerno, Dugenta, Epomeo, Paestum, Pompeiano, Roccamonfina, Beneventano, Terre del Volturno, Campania, Catalanesca del Monte Somma. In the countryside of Benevento is produced the DOC Falanghina del Sannio and the DOCG Aglianico del Taburno, while the Aglianico together with other vines of the territory (Greco, Fiano, Piedirosso…) gives life to the DOC Sannio. Irpinia is the cradle of prestigious wine productions such as DOCG Taurasi, based on Aglianico, DOCG Fiano di Avellino, obtained from the homonymous vine, and DOCG Greco di Tufo. In the same area is produced Irpinia DOC, in its different types (among the reds, besides Aglianico, also Sciascinoso and Piedirosso; among the whites, besides Greco and Fiano, also Coda di volpe and Falanghina). The province of Caserta, on the other hand, gives life to the DOC Falerno del Massico, Asprinio di Aversa (obtained from the characteristic vines that, marinated in poplar, grow vertically), Galluccio and Casavecchia di Pontelatone. Further south, the volcanic soils of the Vesuvian and Neapolitan area guard the Piedirosso, Falanghina, Biancolella, Sciascinoso and Forastera vines, to name a few. From these vines are produced DOC wines such as Vesuvius (and Lacryma Christi of Vesuvius), Falanghina dei Campi Flegrei, Ischia and Capri. Going on, the landscape becomes more and more sweet and fascinating, where the yellow of the lemons blends with the blue of the sea: this is the land where the DOC Sorrento Peninsula is produced with the subzones Lettere, Gragnano and Sorrento. Continuing southwards we reach the Amalfi Coast, where the wines are strongly typicalized, deriving from native vines such as Fenile, Ginestra, Ripolo, Pepella and Tintore, unique for their aromatic complexity. This is the DOC Costa di Amalfi area, with the subzones Furore, Ravello and Tramonti. To the south of Salerno, we finally reach Cilento, where the homonymous national park recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site is located, where the Cilento DOC and Castel San Lorenzo DOC wines are made. In addition, in recent years, during the study activities carried out by specialised research bodies and local producers – and also thanks to the recovery work of the Regional Department of Agriculture – numerous local grape varieties have been re-evaluated. Among them, we can mention: for the province of Avellino, the so-called Greco muscio; for the province of Benevento, the Moscato di Baselice; for the province of Caserta, the Pallagrello bianco, the Pallagrello Nero and the Casavecchia; for the province of Naples, the Caprettone and the Catalanesca; and for the province of Salerno, the Fenile, Ginestra, Ripolo, Pepella, Tintore and Aglianicone varieties. In general, a history of ancient vines and varieties with a surprising richness, which in part is still to be explored today.
